Phil has been a financial planner since 1996 and holds the following qualifications:

Phil Thompson wrote a weekly column in the Canberra Times from 2005 to 2013 providing answers to readers’ questions concerning subjects such as superannuation, insurance, investments, etc.
Phil has been improving the financial literacy and understanding of many people by providing information on the financial planning industry through regular presentations to staff and members of schools, businesses, Government Departments and community groups.
Phil has been a long standing member of the Financial Advice Association Australia (FAAA) and has been actively involved at a local ACT Chapter level, filling the role of Chairman from 2002 to 2007.
Phil has also been honoured by the Commonwealth of Australia, receiving a Bravery Medal from the Governor-General on behalf of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Second.
EMMA MCKENZIE
Financial Adviser
Emma is a Financial Adviser based in the Central West of New South Wales and has been working in financial services since 2017. She holds a Graduate Diploma in Financial Planning, is an SMSF Specialist Adviser™ (SSA®), and has completed her Aged Care Steps Accreditation, supporting her ability to provide informed, holistic advice across a wide range of financial decisions and life stages.
A dedicated member of the Financial Advice Association Australia (FAAA) since 2021, Emma has been fortunate to receive industry recognition for her commitment to financial advice and professional development. This includes being named the FAAA 2024 University Student of the Year, one of Insider’s 40 Under 40 Future Financial Leaders in 2025, and the Women Empowering Wealth Awards Rising Star in 2026.
Emma works with individuals and families at many stages of life, helping them make confident decisions about their financial future. Her areas of advice include retirement planning, wealth accumulation, superannuation and SMSF strategies, aged care entry, personal insurance and estate planning. Known for her clear and practical approach, Emma takes the time to understand what matters to her clients and develop strategies that align their finances with the life they want to live.
Outside of her professional work, Emma is actively involved in her local community, volunteering and umpiring with the Cowra Netball Association and serving as Treasurer of her local preschool board. She values the opportunity to contribute her time and skills to organisations that support local families and the wider community.
JAMES (JIMMY) SCOTT
Client Services Associate
James is based in Sydney and is currently completing a Graduate Diploma in Financial Planning. James was motivated to make a career change into Financial planning by a desire to help people improve their lives and a longstanding passion for investing & personal finance.
Prior to Rise, James worked in the software industry for 7 years across both large listed companies and startups. James holds a Masters in Commerce and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Sydney. He is also an active member of the Financial Advice Association of Australia (FAAA).
Outside of work, James enjoys walking his golden retriever Daisy, travelling, playing basketball and supporting the Sydney Roosters.
